Byzantine shipwreck near Mljet held the Mediterranean's largest gold treasure

After more than ten years of exploration on the Adriatic seabed, archaeologists have revealed one of the most valuable underwater treasures found in decades. The Byzantine shipwreck near the Croatian island of Mljet contained gold coins, ornate ruby-, emerald- and pearl-studded buckles, and a gold signet ring bearing an emperor's image. It is the largest gold treasure ever discovered in the Mediterranean.
