Iceland to vote on EU talks — opposition leader urges Europe not to interfere

Iceland will hold a referendum on August 29 on whether to resume EU accession talks, with early voting beginning Monday. Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir, chair of the centre-right Independence Party and opponent of EU membership, urged European politicians not to interfere in the debate. She stressed that independence carries deep emotional significance for Icelanders, noting the country has only been independent for around 100 years despite a 1,200-year history.
