Four French ministers urged Macron to extend carbon market — he and Bayrou said no

A letter dated 26 May 2025, obtained by Politico, reveals that four French ministers — Eric Lombard, Amélie de Montchalin, Agnès Pannier-Runacher and Marc Ferracci — pressed President Macron and Prime Minister Bayrou to extend the EU carbon market. The reform would have injected an extra €1.2 billion a year into decarbonisation efforts. Both Macron and Bayrou refused, meaning the electrification plan must proceed without additional funding.
