Armenia's Drag Queens Risk Violence and Rejection for the Stage

Yerevan is home to a thriving underground drag scene that draws hundreds of spectators, yet performers still face police raids, family rejection, and physical violence. Armenian attitudes toward LGBTQ people have shifted in part due to the war in Ukraine, creating more space for queer culture in the capital. Despite the progress since a queer club was firebombed in 2012, drag queens describe being bullied, beaten up and killed as ongoing risks.
