Hidden genetic diversity helped inbred snakes conquer Guam
Brown tree snakes that devastated Guam's native birds may have succeeded thanks to hidden genetic diversity. Using long-read DNA sequencing, researchers found over 19,000 large genetic differences concentrated in genes linked to immunity and smell. This overlooked variation may have allowed a population founded by just a few individuals to survive inbreeding and multiply to extraordinary densities on the island.
