Massive evacuation in France — 220,000 people flee Gironde wildfires

A preventive evacuation of 220,000 residents was ordered in the Gironde department of France as wildfires sweep through the region. Strong winds are hampering firefighting efforts and spreading the blaze to new areas. France has so far avoided fatalities, unlike neighbouring Spain, where the fires have already claimed their first victim.
