Invasive 'Sea Cannibal' Devastates Venice Lagoon, Spotted in Poland
The comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi, known as the sea walnut or "sea cannibal," has overrun the Venice Lagoon, causing catches of key fish species to drop by more than 40 percent. Despite resembling a jellyfish, it is not one. The species has also been recorded in the Gulf of Gdańsk and Pomeranian Bay, though Poland's General Directorate for Environmental Protection says it has not yet established a permanent population in Polish waters.
