The Universe expands faster than light — without breaking Einstein's rules

Cosmic expansion allows distant galaxies to recede faster than light without violating Einstein's relativity, which only forbids exceeding light speed locally. We can still see ancient light from those galaxies emitted when they were much closer to us. Accelerating expansion will eventually push nearly every galaxy beyond our Local Group out of sight, leaving the observable Universe looking almost empty.
