The Silurian Hypothesis: could a civilisation have pre-dated humans?

The Silurian Hypothesis is a speculative scientific idea positing that an advanced industrial civilisation could have existed on Earth hundreds of millions of years before humans, leaving too few geological traces to be easily detected today. The 2020 Paris Review piece explores this thought experiment, originally proposed by scientists Adam Frank and Gavin Schmidt.
