Cologne jeweller transferred €348m outside banking system via hawala
A jeweller operating in a predominantly Turkish district of Cologne allegedly carried out transfers of at least €348 million over less than 18 months, entirely outside the banking system and away from tax authorities. Money was received in Germany and paid out in Turkey through hawala, an informal value-transfer system older than modern banking. The man allegedly took a commission for brokering the transactions.
