Off-the-Shelf Thermal Camera Could Help LIGO Detect More Black Hole Mergers

A team led by Jonathan Richardson at UC Riverside has developed a technique using commercially available thermal imaging cameras and computer models to correct heat-induced distortions in the mirrors of the LIGO gravitational-wave observatory. These tiny mirror flaws currently limit how far into deep space LIGO can detect events such as merging black holes. The low-cost fix could significantly boost the number of cosmic collisions LIGO detects without requiring expensive new technology.
