30,000-year-old permafrost bacteria were already resistant to modern antibiotics

Bristol University biologist Liam Shaw describes in his book a find from Canada's Klondike: bacteria extracted from permafrost dating back around 30,000 years showed resistance to an antibiotic only introduced to medicine in 1955. The discovery demonstrates that bacterial resistance is not solely caused by human overuse of drugs, but has existed in nature for millions of years. The finding raises urgent questions about an approaching post-antibiotic era.
