Forgotten WWI attack: Germans blew up a munitions depot near the Statue of Liberty

In July 1916, German saboteurs blew up a munitions depot on Black Tom Island in New York Harbour, just next to the Statue of Liberty. The explosion was one of the largest in US history — felt hundreds of kilometres away — and shrapnel damaged the Statue of Liberty's torch. Unlike the September 11 attacks, this WWI act of sabotage was largely forgotten despite its enormous scale.
