Allianz: €1,430 Headlight Replacements Are Unsustainable — Insurers Push for Repair-Friendly Designs

Modern headlights increasingly require replacement instead of simple repair procedures.

Insurer says repair-friendly designs could significantly reduce costs and CO2 emissions.

A parking lot scrape used to mean a bit of paintwork and maybe a bruised ego. These days, it can also mean a four-figure headlight bill. According to German insurance giant Allianz, modern vehicle lighting technology has become one of the biggest contributors to rising repair costs.

The company says roughly 870,000 headlights are damaged in accidents every year in Germany alone. Even more shocking is how much replacement costs have climbed, Handelsblatt reports. Allianz estimates the average price of a single headlight increased from €708 ($810) in 2015 to €1,251 ($1,430) in 2025, while some units can reportedly cost as much as €6,700 ($7,650) a piece.

Why A Small Scrape Costs So Much

It’s easy to see why. Modern headlights are no longer simple bulbs housed behind basic plastic lenses. Many now feature adaptive functions, matrix LED technology , laser lighting systems, and complex electronics designed to improve visibility and safety. The downside is that even minor damage can quickly become expensive.

Allianz argues the real problem isn’t the technology itself but the way repairs are handled. In many cases, manufacturers don’t offer practical repair solutions for damaged lenses, housings, or electronic components. As a result, entire headlight assemblies often get replaced when only a small portion is damaged. Strict repair rules in countries like Germany – where you aren’t even allowed to polish dull headlights – aren’t helping drivers or insurance companies, either.

Speaking to Handelsblatt , Christian Sahr, head of the Allianz Center for Technology, likened the practice of throwing away headlights over minor problems to discarding “an expensive suit because of a missing button.”

Lights Need To Be Designed With Repairs In Mind

The insurer believes things don’t have to work this way. It points to countries such as France and Denmark, where some forms of headlight repair are already more widely accepted. Allianz is now calling for manufacturers and regulators to make additional repair procedures possible instead of defaulting to complete replacement.

Toyota was singled out as a positive example. According to Allianz, several components within certain Toyota headlight units can be replaced individually, including the lens, housing, electronics, and mounting hardware. As Sahr put it, “Toyota shows that it’s possible. Why can’t anyone else do it?”

But others are already trying to tackle the issue. In December last year we reported how Mercedes plans to swap glue for screws in future headlights to make them more repairable (image below), and at that year’s SEMA show Oracle Lighting unveiled replacement headlights that junk lenses altogether to let vehicle owners easily replace the individual components.

Beyond lower repair bills, Allianz says there are environmental benefits, too. Replacing only damaged sections rather than an entire LED headlight can dramatically reduce waste and carbon emissions.
