Divorce and benefits: what you lose and what you keep after splitting up
Divorce does not automatically strip a person of all financial entitlements — some benefits expire with the marriage, while others remain available to the ex-spouse. In certain circumstances, alimony from a former spouse is still claimable. Survivor's pension rights after a divorced partner's death apply, among other conditions, when the marriage lasted at least 25 years and the ex-spouse was paying alimony after the divorce.
