Odyssey monsters may have real-world origins: cyclops from fossils, Scylla from octopus
With Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey" in cinemas, scientists are highlighting how Homer's mythological monsters may have had real-world explanations. The Cyclops Polyphemus may have been inspired by fossilised skulls of Deinotherium giganteum — a prehistoric elephant relative whose nasal cavity resembles a single eye socket — or by a rare birth defect called cyclopia. Other creatures such as Scylla, Charybdis and the Sirens may similarly have roots in real animals and natural phenomena.
