Wildfires near Madrid: 13 dead, 10,000 evacuated, state of emergency declared
The Spanish government declared a state of emergency as wildfires devastated areas around Madrid and Ávila. At least 13 people have been killed, making 2026 one of the deadliest wildfire years in the country's history. Several fires broke out almost simultaneously under extreme weather conditions, forcing over 10,000 residents west of Madrid to evacuate.
