Greece bids to add Mount Olympus to UNESCO World Heritage list

Greece has submitted a bid to have Mount Olympus, its highest peak at 2,918 metres and the legendary home of the ancient gods, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Local officials and national authorities have lobbied for the designation for years, citing the mountain's exceptional cultural and natural significance. The mayor of Dion-Olympus described the campaign as urgent.
