Venice 2026: Just One Female Director in Main Competition — Barbera Apologises
Only one of the 20 films in Venice Film Festival's 2026 main competition was directed by a woman — Danish film Woman Unknown by May el-Toukhy. Artistic director Alberto Barbera told The Hollywood Reporter he was "very sorry" and "desperate" about the imbalance, attributing it to a lack of qualifying productions rather than festival policy. Major Hollywood titles are also absent from this year's programme.
