Cadillac relaunches gas lineup: new CT5, XT5 and XT6 from spring 2027

Cadillac’s gas-powered makeover begins next spring and continues into 2028.

New XT5 should be the first to arrive, while redesigned CT5 and XT6 will follow.

GM is expanding Super Cruise availability on the 2027 Silverado and Sierra.

General Motors has used their second quarter earnings call to reveal an assortment of details about several upcoming products. This includes the new Cadillac CT5 , XT5, and XT6.

During the call, CEO Mary Barra revealed they’ll “begin launching the next-generation of Cadillac ICE vehicles” in the spring of 2027. While she didn’t specify which vehicle will come first, it’s expected to be the second-generation XT5 that was announced for North America last year . At the time, Cadillac said the crossover would arrive in the second half of 2027.

The CT5 and XT6 will follow shortly thereafter as Barra said the launch schedule will continue into 2028. She added the new gas-powered models will “complement” the electric Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ.

Chinese XT5

Speaking of gas, Barra said the company isn’t seeing consumers shift towards smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles. Instead, she claimed GM has seen strong demand for full-size trucks and SUVs. That’s curious as the war in Iran has driven up gas prices and sent sales of hybrids soaring at rival automakers.

Interestingly, GM’s own Q2 data doesn’t back up Barra’s statement. The Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe were down 20.4% and 8.1%, respectively, while every single version of the Silverado – including light, medium, and heavy duty versions as well as the EV – posted declines of between 0.9% and 29.4%.

GMC Yukon sales also dropped 3.9% in Q2, while the Sierra HD slid 8.3%. Likewise, the Cadillac Escalade was off 5.9%. The only real bright spots were the Sierra and Sierra EV, which climbed 11.3% and 15.2%. However, that only equates to an additional 6,955 units so it’s nothing to write home about.

Despite not having the facts on her side, Barra said “I think something would have to happen for a long period of time before people” would change their buying habits. It’s worth noting GM only has one hybrid in America and it’s a Corvette as they went all-in on EVs.

The recently introduced 2027 Silverado and Sierra 1500s will come standard with Super Cruise on higher-end variants. The semi-autonomous driving system will be optional on most other trims, with the exception of the entry-level work truck. This is a significant change as the system isn’t offered on today’s LT and RST trims, despite costing around $55,000.

In other news, GM Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson noted the company’s market share dropped for three main reasons. Key among them was the ‘strategic decision’ to discontinue certain models such as the Cadillac XT4 and Chevrolet Malibu.

Jacobson also noted the company is “onshoring” production and this should help to reduce tariff costs as more models will be made in America. He also noted production of the Cadillac Escalade will “transfer” to the revamped Orion assembly plant in Michigan. This suggests Arlington Assembly will lose the model, so it can focus exclusively on the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban as well as the GMC Yukon.
