Mercedes-AMG G-Class Cabrio Revealed With Roof Down — But It Doesn't Fully Retract

Mercedes-AMG has released new pictures of the G-Class Cabrio.

They show the model with the soft top lowered for the first time.

SUV gets a unique spare tire cover and chunky rollover protection.

We haven’t heard or seen much of the Mercedes G-Class Cabrio since it was teased in December, but that’s changing today as the company has dropped four new images of the “jaw-dropping” model.

Described as “unmistakably G-Class,” the latest pictures give us our first detailed look at the SUV with the roof lowered. They reveal the model will feature a folding soft top that effectively stacks on top of itself. This mirrors the setup used by Brabus on their ultra expensive 800 and 800 XL convertibles .

While this design will likely limit rearward visibility, the top still manages to limbo underneath the spare tire. It’s also worth noting Mercedes went with a more angular rear pillar than the tuner, which had to develop a “highly complex” retractable soft top featuring over 500 custom-made components.

Getting back to the factory effort, we can see the G-Class Cabrio will have a short, fixed metal roof above the front seats. It’s accompanied by a sizable rear roll bar behind the second-row. It also appears the structure could encircle part of the upper cabin, meaning the open air section could be surprisingly small.

A closer inspection reveals the third brake light has now been integrated into the spare tire cover. This is a welcome change as earlier prototypes had it mounted on a support above the tire.

While there isn’t much else to see, the prototype is clearly an AMG variant . While it remains unclear if the Cabrio will be AMG-only, it seems likely as Mercedes has referred to the model as a special edition.

This means we can expect a G63 Cabrio with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 pumping out 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 627 lb-ft (849 Nm) of torque. It enables the standard model to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds.
