José Mata monument honours the only Canarian matador to achieve national fame

The Canary Islands are celebrated for their volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and dramatic Atlantic coastline—not for bullfighting. Unlike much of mainland Spain, the tradition never gained deep roots in the archipelago. That makes the story of José Mata all the more remarkable. Born in the small village of Las Tricias on the island of La Palma, Mata became the only Canarian matador to achieve lasting national prominence. For a brief period during the 1960s and early 1970s, “El Canario” was among the most recognized figures in Spanish bullfighting.

His path to fame was anything but conventional. Like many islanders seeking opportunity abroad, Mata emigrated to Venezuela, where he worked various jobs and even appeared on television before discovering his calling in the bullring. Returning to Spain, he advanced steadily through the profession’s ranks. In 1965 he received the alternative from the legendary Manuel Benítez “El Cordobés” and later confirmed it at Madrid’s prestigious Las Ventas arena. While many of his contemporaries relied on spectacle, Mata earned respect as a refined and classical stylist, renowned for the precision and elegance of his final sword thrust.

His career ended tragically on July 25, 1971, when he was gored during a corrida in Villanueva de los Infantes. Complications caused by inadequate medical facilities and delayed treatment proved fatal, and he died two days later at the age of 31. The incident sparked national debate about safety standards in smaller bullrings.

Today, a bronze statue of José Mata stands in Santa Cruz de La Palma, honoring a local boy who rose from a remote Atlantic island to become a legend in one of Spain’s most enduring traditions.
