José Mata monument honours the only Canarian matador to achieve national fame

A monument in Santa Cruz de la Palma, Spain, honours José Mata, the only bullfighter from the Canary Islands to achieve lasting national prominence. Born in the village of Las Tricias on La Palma, "El Canario" reached the height of his fame during the 1960s and early 1970s. Before his rise, he emigrated to Venezuela, working various jobs and appearing on television before returning to Spain to pursue bullfighting.
