US Approves Early Design of South Korea's Nuclear Container Ship with Molten Salt Reactors

The American Bureau of Shipping has granted an Approval in Principle for South Korea's conceptual design of a 15,000 TEU container ship powered by two molten salt small modular reactors (SMRs). The approval covers the early design stage and confirms the concept meets applicable safety requirements, subject to additional technical conditions. Removing conventional fuel tanks freed up additional cargo capacity, and the project supports long-term decarbonisation goals for commercial shipping.
