AlphaFold AI used to redesign gene-editing proteins and cut off-target effects

Researchers publishing in Nature have described a method of adapting AlphaFold's protein-folding software to identify key regions of gene-editing proteins responsible for off-target DNA cuts — edits to the wrong DNA sequence. Such off-target effects, though rare per cell, become statistically inevitable when therapies must edit millions of cells. The approach could lead to safer gene therapies by redesigning proteins to minimise unintended edits.
