6-year-old dies after experimental gene therapy in China for non-lethal condition

In March 2025, a 6-year-old girl known as "Mei" was given a first-of-its-kind gene therapy at Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai for a non-lethal condition — and died within a week. The scientists who developed and administered the treatment never publicly disclosed her death. More than a year later, her parents are sharing her story in a joint investigation by Science and Retraction Watch, published July 23, hoping to prevent similar tragedies.
