Google Zero: the web's traffic deal with Google is dead

For years, Google and the web operated on an implicit deal: Google indexed pages and sent traffic in return. That arrangement is now breaking down, as Google increasingly answers queries directly in search results without sending users to external websites. Publishers are calling the resulting traffic collapse "Google Zero," warning it threatens the financial viability of much of the open web.
