Florida teen with 9 prior speeding stops claimed grandma's heart attack on the 10th

Police in Florida pulled over a driver accused of going 61 mph in a 35 mph zone.

19-year-old claimed her grandmother had a heart attack, so she was rushing home.

Police found that she had nine previous stops for speeding in under two years of driving.

Police have a tough job to do, and it’s not made easier by the plethora of different excuses they hear each day for bad driving habits. In the case of a young woman in Florida, an alleged speeding violation initially sounded almost excusable.

She claimed that her grandmother had suffered a heart attack and she was rushing to her aid. Then, the officer started asking questions, checked her record, and found plenty of reasons to question her story. Nine of them, to be exact.

61 In A 35

The incident took place on Chestnut Ct in Marco Island, Florida , a small coastal community where the speed limit is 35 mph. Officer Will Prigge claims the young lady was driving at 61 mph in a Ram 1500 Big Horn. That’s quite quick in something that doesn’t exactly stop quickly should a pedestrian or other motorist end up in the roadway unexpectedly. That said, the woman immediately owned up to the speeding.

“My grandma just had a heart attack a few minutes ago, and I’m on my way to pick her up, which is why I was speeding,” she said. Officer Prigge immediately addressed the potential risk by asking if EMS was headed to the grandmother. The driver initially said yes but then countered by saying that her relative wanted her specifically to take her to a specific heart clinic. By the time the initial interaction was over, the police were full of questions about the legitimacy of the stop. After a quick check of her records, things took a turn.

Nine Strikes Already

“I was seriously considering giving you a warning,” the officer said before informing her that he now knew that she’d been stopped nine times for speeding already. This incident marked the tenth. All of those incidents happened in under two years.

Officer Prigge informed her that she’d already used up the three driver education classes she was allowed to take to plead down the speeding charge as well. That means she’s essentially used up a lifetime of driver safety classes in less than 24 months. She drove away with a ticket rather than a warning. Hopefully her grandmother didn’t have another health scare when she heard about stop number 10.
