FIDE President Dvorkovich Steps Aside After EU Sanctions

Arkady Dvorkovich, Russia's former deputy prime minister and FIDE president, suspended his duties after the EU sanctioned him for supporting actions undermining Ukraine's territorial integrity. Dvorkovich called the decision "unlawful and unfair," saying he is "confident that justice will prevail." Former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand serves as FIDE deputy president and will likely assume his duties. Dvorkovich has led FIDE since 2018 and has faced longstanding criticism over his ties to Vladimir Putin.
