New giant salamander species identified in 3.5-million-year-old Japanese fossils

Fossils found in Japan over 20 years ago have been identified as a new genus and species of giant salamander, named Limnospondylus ajimuensis. The animal lived roughly 3.5 million years ago on a warmer, wetter Kyushu island and may have grown up to 1.1 metres long. Researchers say the discovery suggests many more unknown giant salamander species could be hidden among misclassified fossil collections.
