Egyptian ape fossil rewrites story of human origins
A newly identified fossil ape from northern Egypt suggests that the ancestors of modern apes — including gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees and humans — may have originated in North Africa and the Middle East rather than East Africa. The specimen is more closely related to living apes than any known East African species of the same age, reshaping theories about the birthplace of the ape lineage.
