Durham study: anyone can learn echolocation in just 10 weeks
Researchers at Durham University trained 26 participants — both sighted and blind — in tongue-click echolocation over 10 weeks. By the end of the course, both groups could navigate spaces and avoid obstacles competently. The findings challenge the long-held belief that human echolocation requires years of practice or permanent vision loss.
