Armed Gangs Hold Indigenous Villages Hostage on Brazil-Peru Border

Indigenous leaders on the Brazil-Peru border say organised crime groups have taken their communities "hostage" in the western Amazon. Earlier this month, masked gunmen armed with semi-automatic weapons entered homes in the village of Apiwtxa in the Kampa do Rio Amônia Indigenous Territory, intimidating residents. The gangs are building roads, destroying the rainforest and trafficking drugs. A delegation of leaders has travelled to Brasília to raise the alarm.
