Merck to make new monthly HIV prevention pill available for as little as $5 a year in poor countries

Merck has struck voluntary licensing deals with seven generic drug makers — three in Africa and four in India — to produce its experimental once-a-month HIV prevention pill, alimatravir, in 129 low- and middle-income countries. The royalty-free agreements could make the pill available for as little as $5 per person per year. The deals were announced while alimatravir is still undergoing late-stage clinical trials. Access in much of Latin America remains uncertain.
