Tens of thousands of languages vanished — empires ended the golden age of linguistic diversity
Researchers have determined that Earth experienced a golden age of linguistic diversity lasting roughly two thousand years, during which tens of thousands of languages may have existed. The rise of empires brought this era to an end as dominant languages were imposed on conquered peoples. As a result, a vast number of the world's languages vanished permanently.
