Were the Sarmatians Polish? The complex question of historical national identity

In the WP history programme "Dzieje", Marcin Giełzak examines how national identity was understood very differently in the past compared to today. He uses the examples of Copernicus and Mickiewicz — whose famous line reads "Lithuania, my homeland" — to show that labelling historical figures as Polish is often an anachronism. The Sarmatians, long associated with Polish nobility, were in fact an entirely separate people.
