EMC turns classic G-Wagen into bold orange restomod with upgraded turbodiesel

EMC has upgraded this G-Wagen’s original 2.5-liter turbodiesel five-cylinder.

The overhauled Mercedes is painted in a special shade called Magma Beam Orange.

Contrasting the orange paint are black accents, including the fenders and roll cage.

There are so many companies out there offering upgrade packages for the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen that it’s pretty much impossible to remember all of them. Among those specializing in old G-Class models is Expedition Motor Company , and it’s just unveiled its latest project.

EMC refers to this bright orange 250GD as “period-correct,” but that’s a bit of a misnomer. Sure, it certainly looks very much like an original, but some serious mechanical modifications have been made, starting with the engine.

While EMC will happily upgrade your classic G-Class with a new LS engine, this one retains an original 2.5-liter OM605a turbodiesel five-cylinder from Mercedes-Benz. Ordinarily, this engine delivers up to 150 hp, but thanks to a host of upgrades, including new dual overhead camshafts and a turbocharger, EMC’s one delivers closer to 225 hp, or roughly double what non-turbocharged versions of this engine can muster up.

Obviously, the added power is going to transform how this G-Wagen performs, so while this may be labeled a restoration rather than a real restomod , the latter term seems more appropriate.

Beyond the boosted new engine, EMC has resprayed this Mercedes in Magma Beam Orange and adorned the bodywork with a host of new features, all finished in black. These include a new steel front bumper and bulbar, black fender flares, a black roll cage, and black 17-inch Stahl wheels.

What Else Is New?

There’s plenty going on with the off-roader’s interior, too. To complement the exterior, it’s finished in dual-tone Doppio and Nasturtium-colored leather with stained oak trim. The new materials continue onto the dashboard and the steering wheel.

From behind the wheel, driving this G-Wagen will probably feel very familiar to those who’ve experienced one in the past. However, once you hit the throttle, the added power inevitably transforms the experience.
