Asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs was an exceptionally rare rock type

Scientists have revealed that the asteroid which caused the mass extinction of dinosaurs around 66 million years ago was an exceptionally rare type of carbonaceous rock. Its chemical composition led to the release of an unusually large amount of sulphur gas upon impact, blocking sunlight and triggering a catastrophic cooling of the climate. Had the asteroid been of a more common type, the extinction event might never have occurred.
