BMW X2 M40 facelift adopts Neue Klasse design and Panoramic iDrive

BMW is working on a facelift for the X2 M Performance variant.

It’s expected to trade the M35i moniker for M40 badging.

Crossover adopts a Neue Klasse face and Panoramic iDrive.

Spy photographers snapped the facelifted BMW X2 earlier this month and now they’ve caught up with the M Performance variant. It’s expected to be introduced next year and trade M35i badging for the M40 moniker.

Despite being heavily camouflaged, the changes are immediately apparent as the crossover coupe will adopt a Neue Klasse design that echoes the iX3 and X5 . As you can see, the sizable grille has been banished and replaced by a tall and narrow twin kidney setup.

The grille is flanked by new headlights and a redesigned bumper. The latter looks far less aggressive and has relatively tame vertical air curtains.

Designers seem to have left the profile largely untouched, but the prototype appears to have new side skirts. They’re joined by 20-inch Individual 869i wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking system with blue calipers.

The déjà vu design continues out back as the rear end largely carries over. However, we can see new taillight graphics and what appears to be slimmer reflectors. The bumper is also new and trades a hexagonal license plate recess for a more conventional design.

The single interior image reveals the model will adopt a full-width display at the base of the windshield. That’s a telltale sign of Panoramic iDrive and it should be joined by a 17.9-inch infotainment system as well as a new steering wheel.

Powertrain details are more mysterious, but the current X2 M35i has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine developing 312 hp (233 kW / 316 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system.

This setup enables the crossover coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.2 seconds, before hitting a top speed of up to 155 mph (250 km/h). The new X2 M40 could have a tad more power and be slightly faster.
