King Charles Steps Out of a Tardis to Open Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

The Commonwealth Games opened in Glasgow on Thursday with King Charles and Queen Camilla emerging from a Tardis police box, while a mechanical Loch Ness monster performed the opening bars of Flower of Scotland. Glasgow took over hosting duties at the last minute after Victoria, Australia withdrew citing financial pressures. The Tardis nod was doubly fitting: police boxes were designed by Scottish architect Gilbert MacKenzie Trench, and the Doctor Who reference echoed the Games' own near-extermination.
