Two Wilder Toyota GR GT Prototypes Spotted at Nürburgring Before Launch

The twin-turbo V8-powered Toyota GR GT is about to get even more exciting.

Two prototypes snapped at the Nurburgring feature several aerodynamic upgrades.

A more track-focused version of the GR GT was seen with a large rear wing.

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing department is so committed to performance that before customer deliveries of the halo GR GT have even begun, testing has started on two additional variants. Evidently, Toyota will follow a similar path as Mercedes-AMG with its GT 63 and the several different versions on offer.

These two prototypes were recently snapped doing the rounds at the Nurburgring , the most punishing location of its kind on Earth. The first prototype, completely covered in camouflage, looks much the same as the production car presented in December last year, but some minor tweaks suggest this will be a slightly higher-performance spec, or an upgrade package available to the standard model.

Visible at the front are a pair of aerodynamic canards attached to the outer edges of the bumper, slightly boosting downforce. As for the rear, it has an exposed carbon fiber lip spoiler, whereas the regular GR GT has a body-colored one. It does not appear, however, as though this lip spoiler is any larger.

No other visible changes have been made to the car, but if this is indeed a slightly more focused version, expect several changes under the skin, including newly tuned suspension and braking components. Software alterations are also a distinct possibility.

Then There’s The True Track-Focused Version

Testing alongside this GR GT prototype was another, even more focused version. It looks more like Toyota’s equivalent to the 911 GT3 RS , although given how much larger and heavier the GR GT is compared to a 911, it could perhaps be best described as Toyota’s answer to the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, although likely not quite as extreme.

Engineers have added a splitter to the front, alongside four canards and new front quarter panels, complete with adjustable louvers. Positioned at the rear is a towering swan-neck style wing. Surprisingly, the rear bumper and diffuser don’t appear to be any different.

As standard, the halo Toyota uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, which is said to produce in excess of 641 hp and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) in standard specification. For a more track-focused version, some extra grunt can be expected, perhaps edging closer to the 700 hp mark.

Inevitably working alongside the new aerodynamic package will be upgraded chassis and suspension components to boost handling. The car may also go on a diet, shedding some weight from the standard model, which is expected to weigh around 3,858 lbs (1,750 kg).
