PlayStation's disc phase-out threatens $7.2bn used games market

Sony plans to stop producing physical discs for PlayStation consoles by 2028, threatening a used games market worth $7.2 billion in 2025 that analysts had expected to grow to $13.8 billion by 2034. Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter declared "brick and mortar game retail is doomed," noting that at least a third of all games sold are used titles. Fewer discs in circulation will reduce opportunities to buy both new and second-hand games, analysts warn.
