Fields Medal 2026: Hong Wang becomes only third woman ever to win

The International Mathematical Union announced the 2026 Fields Medal winners on July 24. The prize, awarded every four years to mathematicians under 40, went to Hong Wang (NYU) for work on needle motion in 3D spaces, Yu Deng (University of Chicago) for linking microscopic and macroscopic descriptions of gases, and John Pardon (Stony Brook) for breakthroughs in topology and geometry. Wang is only the third woman to win the medal in the award's 90-year history.
