AI data centre debt tops $500bn — analysts warn of 2008-style crisis

Bloomberg estimates more than $500 billion in outstanding AI data centre debt, with around $200 billion held by private credit funds. The debt is largely issued through special purpose vehicles (SPVs) that keep billions off corporate balance sheets, in a structure analysts increasingly compare to the subprime mortgages behind the 2008 financial crisis. CoreWeave, for example, isolates each loan inside its own separate SPV, meaning parent companies report only a fraction of their true exposure.
