Farming first sparked then erased thousands of languages, study finds

A study published in Nature on 23 July 2026 suggests that the shift from nomadic to farming lifestyles first triggered a surge in linguistic diversity, then caused it to decline rapidly. Thousands of languages that existed at the dawn of agriculture have since been lost.
