Mary Pit Head in Fife, Scotland – a rare surviving coal mine monument

The Kingdom of Fife has a rich mining history, but nowadays, most of it is gone. The concrete frame of the No 2 Pit at Mary Colliery, informally known as "Big Mary" (to differentiate from "Wee Mary", a nearby competitor), remains one of only two reminders of the coal mines in this area, standing 80 foot high.

Adjacent to the structure is a small outdoor exhibit which showcases equipment from the time, such as coal-cutters, hydraulic roof supports, and carts (both for coal and for miners) that were used in the pit. The 'cage' that lowered miners into the pit is also displayed.

Additionally, there is a preserved locomotive steam engine, Andrew Barclay Works No 2259 No 30 0-4-0ST, present which can be explorer. It is typical of the National Coal Board engines that were used in collieries like this.

A noticeboard nearby also details the known deaths and injuries that occurred during the operation of the pit, sourced from historic newspapers, of which there were sadly many.
