Pokémon Diamond & Pearl developers built game maps out of Lego

Developers of the Nintendo DS RPGs Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl used Lego bricks to physically design and refine the games' maps. Rather than relying solely on software tools, designers built hands-on physical models to work out the game world's layout. It is an unusual but effective example of toys serving as a professional game development tool.
