Brain circuits in bees determine which jobs they perform in the colony
Scientists have found that specific brain circuits in bees govern which roles individual insects take on as they age within the colony. When these circuits were deactivated, older worker bees reverted to queen-tending behaviour instead of their usual later-life tasks. The findings suggest that a bee colony's sophisticated division of labour is controlled by neural switches embedded in each bee's brain.
