France: 30 days' paid leave minimum and the summer shutdown tradition
French workers are entitled to a minimum of 30 days of paid leave per year, and the country is famous for virtually shutting down during July and August. Most shops, businesses and public services operate on reduced hours or close entirely over the summer. The phenomenon stems from the deeply ingrained culture of "congés payés" — paid holidays introduced in the 1930s.
