Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram appointed Poland's new human rights commissioner

Poland's parliamentary majority has elected lawyer and activist Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram as the country's new human rights commissioner. She is best known for opposing the judiciary overhaul carried out by the former Law and Justice (PiS) government. PiS, now in opposition, strongly objected to her appointment, claiming she is politically aligned with the current more liberal government. She takes office as the five-year term of incumbent Marcin Wiącek expires.
