Russia strips rights of citizens abroad under sweeping new 'traitor' law
Russia's State Duma has passed a law enabling the freezing of bank accounts, seizure of property and blocking of consular services — including passport renewal — for Russians abroad who are evading criminal charges at home. Lawyers described the measures as amounting to "de facto loss of citizenship." Political activists and journalists are considered the most at-risk groups under the new legislation.
